It’s an honour to be here in Baden Offord’s class. I have long respected his skill as a Professor and an Academic and I’m here to make sure that he comes back to Southern Cross University because your University can’t have him. And the answer to what Baden said about a lawyer and a politician, in his introduction, is that lawyers don’t make good politicians. But I tell you that if you happen to be a politician by nature, law is a useful skill to have. [ See more ]

Occasional Address delivered by The Hon John Dowd AO QC at the graduation ceremony held at Macquarie University on Thursday, September 21, 2006

Chancellor, Professor Schwartz, Graduates, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, it is a great honour for me to be here today as part of this ceremony. This is an occasion for all of the graduates and their families to enjoy and enjoy throughout the day. For me it is an occasion to come back to this land which I knew as bush land some fifty years ago, it is also a university where I have had the honour of presiding over moots for the Law faculty, and is it also the university, where as of today’s graduation ceremony, two of my four daughters are now graduates of Macquarie University. Politics is about Perceptions

I want to give you a series of examples of how people alter perceptions to create a straw man, and to use it as a tool to both participate in and to distort the democratic process. A classic example is the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, who probably watches CNN, understands a bit about International Politics, and is not about to bomb any body with Nuclear Weapons or otherwise, but of course, if he creates the impression that he is going to do so, when does he do it?
