Professor Dr Wang Shou President of Tianjin University of Science and Technology, Professor Wang Xue Kui Vice President of International Affairs, Professor Xang Aihua Vice President of Student affairs, Dr Geoffrey Lamberton, Professor Zhang Jian Guo Dean of the International College
It is a great honour and privilege for me to extend my welcome to you to this presentation ceremony at this great university. It is not my first actual visit to this dynamic city of which I have heard so much and where there has been so much progress during recent years in its development as a major centre of the People’s Republic of China. It is my first actual visit here, as some thirty years ago I travelled through it by train but unfortunately I was not able to get off the train. This visit is the fulfilment of a long-awaited dream of mine.
We at the Southern Cross University are very proud of our association with Tianjin University of Science and Technology. It is a university which produces the high quality of students who will go on to make the growth of the People’s Republic of China even more rapid and successful.
In the thirty years from 1981 to 2010, the development and expansion of China has pulled some 680 million people in China from poverty and reduced its extreme poverty rate from 84% in 1980 to 10% now. This means that the world’s Millennium Development Goals in eradicating poverty have been brought significantly nearer.
China’s rapidly developing economy has been brought about by its high technological and agricultural advances but it is part of the nature of China that its people apply themselves to hard work and high productivity. The other success of China has been in education. The graduating students today will be part of the successful progress of China and will contribute not only to China’s advancement and economy, but to the world’s greater development.
Today’s students who are completing their course, and indeed existing students can look forward to a fruitful and fulfilling career both in the skills that they have acquired and the leadership abilities that will flow from those skills.
Please look at our website if any of you wish to pursue any studies in Australia and we hope that you will keep in touch with our alumni.
Congratulations to those who have completed their course and good luck to those still studying.
The Hon John Dowd AO QC
Chancellor of Southern Cross University
